Math

The virtual manipulatives and games on this page have been tested by a second grade teacher to see if they are classroom/curriculum "friendly" - I hope you agree and find them useful while teaching Everyday Math! I have divided the links into broad math topics, given the "spiraling" nature of Everyday Math. Second grade Math standards for the State of Michigan can be found here.

*Many of these links need Java installed to work. It's a simple install, but it may need to be installed on computer lab computers before you take your class to the lab.

Number sense

Virtual base (10) blocks - use instead of overhead to show how they work. It will also create problems (numbers to build)
Number line and place value - great number line practice and would also be useful for estimating
Interactive 100's chart - good for showing patterns and counting, can adjust to start at any number or count by any number
Interactive 100's chart 2 - good for showing patterns and skip counting, "counters" are transparent chips that can be dragged to any number. Good for game demonstration of Number -Grid Game (Lesson 1.8).
Interactive 100's chart 3 - this one has numbers that can be hidden and revealed. Really good for 100's chart concepts.
Interactive 100's chart game - Gamebone - a very cool game to get kids comfortable with where numbers are on the chart
Estimating on # line - can be played with the whole class to work on estimating using a number line. Various levels available.
Place value worksheets - lots of printable place value worksheets with answer keys. Some are customizable.

Addition and Subtraction

Using a number line - Addition and subtraction practice using a number line. Nice way to illustrate use of "hops" on number line.
Changing numbers - Easiteach lesson using combination of word problems and "Start, Change, End" diagram to solve addition and subtraction problems
Total/part - Easiteach lesson using total/part diagram to solve word problems
Fact Families - Easiteach lesson that uses electronic die to generate numbers to create fact families
Grand Slam Math - interactive game for students to practice double digit addition and subtraction presented in word problems.
Addition fact practice - basic addition practice that can be played on whiteboard, netbooks, or in the computer lab

Multiplication and Division

Times Table - Traditional times table with answers hidden. Students give answer, click on space to uncover answer.

Fractions

Fraction Demonstration - Divide circle into fractional parts, click on part to show fraction in numbers
Naming Fractions - really nice fraction practice/review

Measurement

Literature and Measurement - multi-day unit incorporating popular children's literature, measurement, and technology written specifically for 2nd grade. Books are common and probably found in your classroom or school library
Weight and Capacity Video - animated clip explaining definition of weight and capacity, as well as key vocabulary. Can be temperamental when loading, so be patient.
Interactive thermometer - move the slider on the thermometer to see the temperature change. It reads the temperature in Celsius and Fahrenheit and shows a picture representation of that temperature.

Time

Interactive clock - Shows current time, buttons for adding or subtracting time by 1 min., 15 mins., 30 mins., or an hour. Can hide or show digital time.
Interactive clock 2 - Allows for movement of hand forwards and backwards by minute increments of 1, 5, or 15, and one hour. No digital clock.
Elapsed time line - Useful for explaining elapsed time on an IWB. Read the instructions on the first page and then click on "Go to Interactive Whiteboard Resource" at the bottom of the page for the time line.

Money

Counting money - 3 different activities relating to money. Especially like the "Make a dollar" activity
Math money - coins - Easiteach lesson where students drag coins to match amount in box below
Math money-ENO.et - Easiteach lesson that has several items to "buy" where students drag money displayed at top of screen into appropriate box
Cash Drawer - simple counting money practice. Does have "ads," but game is nice straightforward money counting practice.
Counting coins - 3 levels of difficulty for counting coins. Some ads on page, but game is good and can be used on IWB.

Geometry

Virtual pattern blocks - use instead of overhead for demonstration, also great in computer lab for individual students
Patch Tool - called Patch tool, but similar to Virtual Pattern Blocks (above). Pattern blocks can be placed, rotated, etc. to fill a space (patch) or to create one of the given patterns.

Virtual geoboard - use for demonstration
Lines of Symmetry video - in depth animated video demonstrating line of symmetry. A bit long, but students should understand what a line of symmetry is by the end! It also has an interactive portion toward end of each section. Use with Lesson 5.7.

Coordinates and Graphing

Create a graph - Show students how to create a bar graph. Choose title, labels, number of rows and columns. Will also show totals and percentages.
Circle graph - Use given data or input your own to create a circle graph (pie graph) of the information.
Using data to answer questions - video from BBC that describes process of collecting data and organizing it to find an answer to a common question (Are dogs the most popular pets?)

Etc.

A Maths Dictionary for Kids - comprehensive animated dictionary of math terms. Good for review of concepts or reteaching of difficult concepts. Helpful for visual learners.
Calculator - simple calculator similar to ones most early elementary students use.
Concentration - favorite activity with my students. Can be used to practice numbers, shapes, fractions, or multiplication facts.
Probability - interactive spinner to teach about probability
60 second timer - timer that counts down from 60 seconds to 0
Spinner - random spinner using numbers 1-8. Numbers are "removed" once used, then it resets
Math Games - a huge variety of games for students to play on own. Many concepts appropriate for 2nd grade. You can also create your own matching game and quiz.
Make your own worksheet - make your own money worksheet. Lots of options for customization.
